August Jansen got educated in St. Petersburg. After he finished his studies at the Society for Promoting Arts he was awarded the Big Silver Medal. From 1905 to 1913 he studied in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under Braz, Zioglinsky and Kardovsky. He returned to Estonia after graduating from the Academy and started teaching. In 1938 he was awarded the title of professor of art. Up to the thirties he was strongly influenced by the "Mir Iskusstva" ("World of Art ") movement.
Exhibitions of August Jansen were held in St. Petersburg (Academy of Arts in 1909), then in Tallinn in 1910 and 1916, in Tartu in 1914 and in Petrograd in 1918. Works of August Jansen were shown in Riga, Helsinki, Paris, Lubeck, Cologne, Copenhagen, Moscow, Rome, Kaunas, Budapest and Antwerp.
