Romanov – Outstanding Figures of Epochs
The ruler portrait as a genre first arose thousands of years ago together with a national identity formation in Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley.
The portraits of this genre emphasized the human dignity, majesty, solemnity, and of course the similarity, but there was not any psychological content in the painting.
There are many historical researches and biographical novels devoted to the rulers, but portraits also can say a lot about the personality of the ruler.
Estonia was ruled by the Russian Tsars up to the year 1917. Therefore there are very many portraits of the members of the Royal Family in the Estonian museums.
And the most important thing is that they have survived to the present day. May be there are even more portraits of the Romanov Family in the Estonian museums than in the Russian museums.
Johann Köhler – a kind of phenomenon – was the first Estonian professional painter, who created about 30 portraits of Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II, their wives and other attendants.
Nowadays the portraits of the Romanov Family members have been exhibited again...

Mark Kostabi (born1960). Sail to remember (1992).
Description: Poster, paper
50,8 x 63,5
Lower right – Mark Kostabi
Artist and composer Mark Kostabi might be considered a bit of a prat by many people. Master of self-publicity, he has been around on the New York art scene since the 1980s, a kind of canker on the face of the master of art for self-publicity, Jeff Koons.
But is he any good? Has his notorious stance on using painting assistants worked for him?
Well, to the first question, the work is not that great. It looked poor in the 80s and now it still looks poor but looks even worse because the poorness is dated. And you can't get away from the fact that Giorgio de Chirico got there first and did it infinately better. So some may say that makes Kostabi a poor man's de Chirico but I wouldn't as, in my book, there should be some kind of law preventing anyone putting "Kostabi" in the same sentence as "de Chirico".
To the second question, all the evidence appears to say it hasn't worked. For whatever Kostabi says about it his signature is not worth alot. From time to time, he sells autographed cards and pieces on ebay.com and, well, the prices say it all. Check them out for yourself.
And at the end of the day, put yourself in this position: you get into an elevator and standing the there are Kostabi and Jeff Koons. You have time just to get one signature. Who is it going to be? Sorry, Mark, I'll come back later for yours. Much later!
But you have to admire the guy for what he has achieved with very little talent. And to have stretched out career now well into its third decade is one of the wonders of the modern world!
He was born in Los Angeles in 1960 to Estonian immigrants. He was raised in Whittier, California.
In 1982 he moved to New York and by 1984 became a figure of the East Village art movement. He appeared in a photograph standing next to Andy Warhol and, well, it was a smart career move.
In 1988 he founded Kostabi World – a studio, gallery and office complex known for openly employing painting assistants and idea people. Pity the idea people coudn't have come up with more ideas. Seemed they were rather lazy.
The Mitsukoshi Museum in Tokyo (1992) and the Art Museum of Estonian Tallinn (1998) have held retrospective exhibitions of his work. Big in Japan then.
Kostabi's work is in the storage warehouses of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Groninger Museum in Holland.
In 1988 he painted a mural in the Palazzo dei Priori in Arezzo, Italy and completed a commissioned public sculpture To See Through is Not to See Into, for the city of San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy. Big in Italy as well.

Miró, Joan (1893
Description: Colour lithograph, paper
Plm 33 x 24
WV 1041
Spanish painter, whose surrealist works, with their subject matter drawn from the realm of memory and imaginative fantasy, are some of the most original of the 20th century.
Miró was born April 20, 1893, in Barcelona and studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and the Academia Galí. His work before 1920 shows wide-ranging influences, including the bright colors of the Fauves, the broken forms of cubism, and the powerful, flat two-dimensionality of Catalan folk art and Romanesque church frescoes of his native Spain. He moved to Paris in 1920, where, under the influence of surrealist poets and writers, he evolved his mature style. Miró drew on memory, fantasy, and the irrational to create works of art that are visual analogues of surrealist poetry. These dreamlike visions, such as Harlequin's Carnival or Dutch Interior, often have a whimsical or humorous quality, containing images of playfully distorted animal forms, twisted organic shapes, and odd geometric constructions. The forms of his paintings are organized against flat neutral backgrounds and are painted in a limited range of bright colors, especially blue, red, yellow, green, and black. Amorphous amoebic shapes alternate with sharply drawn lines, spots, and curlicues, all positioned on the canvas with seeming nonchalance. Miró later produced highly generalized, ethereal works in which his organic forms and figures are reduced to abstract spots, lines, and bursts of colors.
Miró also experimented in a wide array of other media, devoting himself to etchings and lithographs for several years in the 1950s and also working in watercolor, pastel, collage, and paint on copper and masonite. His ceramic sculptures are especially notable, in particular his two large ceramic murals for the UNESCO building in Paris (Wall of the Moon and Wall of the Sun, 1957-59). Miró died in Majorca, Spain, on December 25, 1983.

Pehap, Erich (1912–1981). The Bared. (1934).
Description: Charcoal on paper
Vm 95 x 68
Lower right - E. P. – 34 Pallas.
Graphic artist and painter Erich Pehap studied painting in "Pallas" under the guidance of Nikolai Triik, but graduated from the school in 1939 as a graphic artist. This chalk drawing was probably made in Finland, where the artist stayed from 1943 to 1944 prior to moving to Sweden. Pehap’s Swedish period lasted until 1949 when he went to Toronto. As an artist, Pehap was successful abroad. He won several prizes and his works can be found in collections in Canada, England, Germany, Italy, etc. This spring landscape with blooming trees reminds us that Pehap was a successful landscape painter, using aquarelle and drawing in his homeland.
