The graphic artist Herald Eelmaa studied at the ERKI from 1953 to 1959 and made illustrations for the first part of A.H. Tammsaar's novel Truth and Justice. After graduation, the artist devoted himself mainly to high-tech printmaking.
Until the beginning of the 1970s, he practiced mostly linoleum cut in free graphics, expanding the possibilities of expressing this technique in Estonian printmaking. The prevailing realistic realism in earlier works receded in the mid-1960s towards a more decorative approach (Flowering, 1968). The transition to drawing was revolutionized in creation, and the virtuosic drawing skills characterize most drawings of the 1970s.
